It's time to invest in yourself

Picture

One of the biggest mistakes I made in my own journey as a social worker was to not invest in myself earlier.

I completed my MSW education and then did not make clinical supervision a priority. After all, I had no intention of ever going into private practice.

It's funny how life unfolds in ways we never saw coming, isn't it?

For years after graduation, I worked in social work positions where I was promised clinical supervision from my agencies but it was never a priority for them, or for me. Caseloads were too high, staffing was too low, or supervisor schedules were too tight. There was always a reason to put off supervision. What was the rush anyways?

Finally, one colleague convinced me to make supervision a priority for myself. She made an excellent point - I had spent years pursuing my education, investing not just my time but also my money. Why wouldn't I take my career as far as I could? Why not get licensed at the highest level? Wouldn't it be great to give myself every opportunity for growth and secure as many options as possible for my future? Didn't I owe it to myself to make myself a priority?

She was right and it turns out that clinical supervision was the best gift I ever got for myself. It brought me insight, clarity, confidence, and skill that I never thought possible. It opened up doors I never knew existed and led me to where I am today.

Don't you owe yourself the same level of support?

I believe every social worker owes it to themselves to make clinical supervision a priority. It's the one final step after our education that so many of us put off and minimize. You are worth the investment of your time!

With nearly 15 years of experience as a clinical supervisor, I offer focused supervision for those pursuing LCSW and LICSW supervision in the state of Massachusetts.
In addition to in-person supervision, I offer video supervision sessions via FaceTIme and Skype. Areas of specialization for clinical supervision include:
- Children and families
- Hospice and palliative care
- Medical social work
- Geriatrics
- Psychotherapy

Feedback from supervisees

"I always looked forward to and am grateful for my time spent with Jenni Brennan. She is warm-hearted, organized, intelligent, and always provided me with excellent clinical supervision."
- Kelly D.

"Jenni provided supervision as I worked towards my LICSW. She offered a perfect balance of challenge and affirmation, helping me to push my boundaries and identifying my strengths. Jenni brought a wider view of the field of social work, incorporating her experiences from her work in the adoption field, hospice and higher education in our sessions. With Jenni's support I not only passed my LICSW exam with ease, but I am a more confident, wise and knowledgeable social worker."
