Anxiety affects 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older while it is estimated that nearly 17 million adults in the United States have had at least one episode of depression within the past year. (Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 2019).

When we look at the statistics around anxiety and depression it’s no wonder that the bulk of my experience within the field of clinical social work has included working with individuals who are battling some form of anxiety and/or depression.
Why is there such a prevalence of anxiety and depression? I think it is the result of many factors including, but not limited to: - more openness and dialogue around formerly stigmatized topics like anxiety and depression - a more fast-paced lifestyle with increased financial stresses - genetic links to anxiety and depression from previous generations
